The holiday West Elm catalog features the work of Dana Tanamachi, who I blogged about last January here. Page six in the catalog motivated me to decorate the front door for December:

Keeping it simple around here.

Back of the Front Door

I’m really happy with how this project turned out.  I was inspired to paint the back side of my front door with chalkboard paint after seeing different photos online and in magazines of people who’d pulled it off.  My only concern was the lack of light we get in the entry.  I figured that the black would either anchor the space or act like a black hole.  When it was just the black paint, I wasn’t too sure, but now that I’ve done a bit of chalk drawing, I’m happy with it.  I’m also guessing that as I erase and draw new things, the door will develop a patina of sorts.

So, here’s the before:

And after the paint dried:

The actual painting was a breeze: I wiped down the door, slapped on a coat of paint, waited four hours, and put on another coat.  I waited three days to use chalk on it (per the instructions).

I’ll take some more pictures when the sun comes out again- the overhead light doesn’t really do it justice.
