Winterized the Door

The holiday West Elm catalog features the work of Dana Tanamachi, who I blogged about last January here. Page six in the catalog motivated me to decorate the front door for December:

Easy Bed Slipcover

Nov

This has got to be one of the easiest sewing projects I’ve ever done- probably because it involves no sewing at all! I was looking to update the look of our bed and add a bit of storage as well. I was inspired by Nick Olsen’s work featured in House Beautiful last August- the upholstered headboard and the tip on lifting up the bed, in particular. You can see how our bedroom looked previously here.

I slipcovered the headboard and footboard with canvas drop cloths I found at Home Depot. I bought two drop cloths- one for the head and foot of the bed, and one to make a bed skirt (not photographed). I cut the drop cloths in half, and wedged the fabric between the mattress and box spring for the bed skirt. I draped the fabric over the headboard and footboard, wrong side out, and pinned in place with safety pins. Then I flipped the covers inside out like a pillow case, and draped over the bed!

The whole project cost around $40! Not bad for a whole new look.

West Elm Opening

Marta and I went to the West Elm Seattle pre-opening party last night, and I brought my camera to document it.

I thought I was going to buy some stuff, but it was very crowded and the lines at the register were very long. I plan on going back to check it out under normal circumstances.

My Grandmother’s House

Sep

There aren’t many things that have changed in my Grandma Ginny’s house over the years. She’s gotten new furniture and updated her kitchen, but the core statement pieces have remained the same. I was inspired to photograph her living and dining areas recently, and I found that looking at her home through a camera gave me a new appreciation for her decor. She has lived in this house since the early sixties, but nothing about it feels outdated. Take a look!

Fireplace is Coming Together

The little elephant friend is from Ross. The screen is a piece of display board that I covered with (clearance-priced) fabric and taped to the back. I’m finally embracing my hoarding of catalogs and magazines and putting them on display. I’m on the fence with those three vases. Maybe I just need to switch out the dried grass, I dunno. It’s nice to have the fireplace be a focal point rather than a black hole of 80’s design.

Thinking of Buying

Apr

A Chemex coffee maker.

I noticed one of these in a recent West Elm catalog, and my first thought was positive: “Wow, how beautiful.” But my second thought was negative: “West Elm always shows such cool vintage stuff and I have no way of knowing what they are called or where to find them.”

Flash forward to last week when I entered “mid-century modern” into ebay and a couple of these puppies turned up! I was even more psyched to learn that they still make them, and you can buy them new (just google the name and you’ll see). This little string of events was particularly fortuitous because Brian had mentioned that he wants to get a coffee maker like my parents’. No, they don’t have a Chemex, (if they did, this whole post would be moot, wouldn’t it?) but one that operates in the same fashion, while being less fashion-able. Perhaps this new coffee maker will distract from the blandness that is our flat surface electric range?

Rug Swap

Jan

Ever since I bought new curtains from West Elm, I’ve felt the need to change the look of the bedroom. There were just too many prints happening in that room. So, with Brian’s help, I switched the rugs in the living room and bedroom.

Behold:

The photos don’t fully do it justice, but this little switch has made a big difference. The bedroom isn’t so busy looking, and the living room is big enough to handle the printed rug. Also, the printed rug is nice and squishy, which I think we’ll appreciate more in the new spot.
