Fall Trend: Printed Pants

Aug
No Comments   Posted by gretchen |  Category:Fashion

The printed denim trend is pretty much universally accepted at this point (I mean, when they’re sold at Target…). But would you wear printed dress pants to the office? How about to dinner or cocktails? I’m excited for this fall trend, for a few reasons:

  • it’s a fun update from the 60s (thankfully no printed suits)
  • a great reason to keep your top simple and show off the jewelry
  • creates some visual interest when you’re in your heavy coat

Here are a few options for printed pants, whether you just want to dip your toe into this trend, or go all out:

The Shops at Target Fall Collection- My Picks

Aug
No Comments   Posted by gretchen |  Category:Fashion, Gifts, Home Decor, shopping

I always get excited when a new collaboration with Target is announced. Who doesn’t love the chance to grab a limited edition piece at a good price? I’ve gotten swept up into the madness that has surrounded their higher profile designer collaborations (like driving 70 miles round trip to a small town Target to buy Missoni, or dragging Brian out of bed so we could divide and conquer at Jason Wu). The Shops at Target seems to be less about tapping into an already existing fan base, and more about bringing small business owners into the national spotlight. The benefit to all of us regular Target shoppers is that we probably won’t be faced with a long line of folks who showed up at the bull’s eye before dawn, and there are some really beautiful items to add to your home and wardrobe.

The fall collection of The Shops at Target comes to stores September 9th. Here’s what I’ll be looking for:

From New York City boutique Kirna ZabĂȘte, I’ll be picking up pieces that should transition nicely from summer to fall. We all know the maxi dress isn’t going anywhere, and I love how it is styled here, with a bit of an edge, but I can also see it looking great with my favorite gladiator sandals and a fedora. You can’t tell from the photo, but the dress in the middle has long sleeves, which is always a great option for fall, and the abstract grey and white pattern makes this a great piece to pair with this season’s brightly colored sweaters. I’ve been contemplating faux-leather pants for a while, and $30 seems like an easy way to try the trend.

Patch NYC has nice selection of soft goods as well as some ceramics. Who wouldn’t want to wake up to cute little bunnies every morning on your comforter? The neutral palate keeps the sham and comforter set from looking too juvenile. So many cake stands are white, I just know the black base on this one will stand out in a good way with my collection (and the bucks illustration on the surface makes for a nice surprise as you hand out cake slices). This serving tray has classic lines and just the perfect amount of detail with the feather impression on the handles.

The Curiosity Shoppe has some fun 50’s style old west kitchen and serving items. The arrow feather detail on the serving spoons brings the salad bowl set from basic to quirky. These tea towels would make a great hostess gift, and could even be framed for some simple art. While I don’t usually blog about menswear, the New York men’s shop Odin has this elegant soy candle (not sure about the scent, but I’ll be checking it out). And while I’m not holding my breath, perhaps these desert boots will come in a small enough size to fit me (or I’ll just get them for Brian and live vicariously through him).

What’s caught your eye from The Shops at Target?

Retro Inspired Camping

Last week, two big stories caught my attention: 1) There will be a new Girl Scout Cookie this year & 2) A new Wes Anderson film will be coming soon. I couldn’t help but think of my own camp outs as a Girl Scout after watching the movie trailer, and if I could do it all again with the retro-style we all love about Wes Anderson, it would go a little something like this:

Christmas Loot Look

Jan

The shoes were the Christmas gift from my little brothers (siblings working at Nordstrom is a GOOD thing (yes, I told them to get this for me)). The pants were my Christmas present from Brian (he surprised me by getting these after I blogged about them here). I love how well they work together- it’s true, animal prints DO work as a neutral!

I kind of feel like I could jump up on the coffee table at any moment and start doing the frug when I wear this.

In other brightly colored clothing news:

I can’t get this ensemble out of my head. Nordstrom, you may be my new J. Crew.*

Photos: Gretchen Lilly, Nordstrom.com

*I still love the look of J. Crew, but the quality of their garments has really taken a nose dive- I can’t get behind spending $40 for a shirt that starts falling apart after five wearings! I have shirts from Target that have done better!

Wet & Wild Dressing

Nov
No Comments   Posted by gretchen |  Category:Fashion

The weather around Seattle has been wet, windy, and cold- par for the course this time of year, I know. But would you believe as a native Washingtonian I’m often stumped as to how to dress myself in the months between November and March? Rain boots are cute, but I don’t want to wear them all day long (and they aren’t very workplace appropriate). My trusty black North Face hooded shell keeps me dry, but we all know it isn’t very cute. I’ve put together an outfit that should keep anyone venturing outdoors warm and dry.

1. Pendleton Chief Joseph Cherry Wood Sunglasses (when it’s cold AND sunny) 2. RawEarth Studio Southwest Porcupine Quill Necklace 3. The North Face Baker Delux Jacket (I love the pockets, I avoid taking a purse when it’s raining) 4. Madewell Winter Stripe Henley 5. J Brand Fuchsia Skinny Jeans (you need some color when the weather is gloomy) 6. Steve Madden Lindley Boots (I was at a meeting with a girl wearing last year’s version and I couldn’t take my eyes off the bright zipper!)

Tweed Ride

Nov

The Dandies and Quaintrelles fall Tweed Ride was this weekend, and I’ve been pouring over their Flickr album to soak up all of the goodness. Basically, folks show up on their bikes wearing creative tweed ensembles and ride around DC. I’d love to take part in this some day, or the Seersucker Social in the summer, which I blogged about here.

While there is a strong vintage vibe going on at the event, tweed is still a big part of today’s fashion. I’ve rounded up a few items:

Clockwise from top left: Lands End Canvas Men’s Hat; Talbots Jacket; J Crew Skirt; LL Bean Signature Jacket.

Etsy finds, clockwise from top left: Men’s Blazer from Newton Street Vintage; 1950s Hat from Old Faithful Vintage; A-line Skirt from Wild Love Vintage; Cape and Shorts set from SL Vintage.
